162 gets Karnataka Rajyotsava Awards for 2010

Bangalore: Commonwealth Games medal winners, industry captains and a record number of 15 journalists are among the 162 people who have been accorded with the Rajyotsava Award by the Karnataka government for the year 2010.

Announcing the list, Kannada and Culture Minister Govind M Karjol told reporters that people from all walks of life from all the 30 districts of the state and abroad were recognised for the award and more than 50 per cent of them had not applied for it.

The noted among the winners include Commonwealth Games gold winners A Ashwini (4x400 m relay), Ashwini Ponnappa (Badminton doubles) and Vikas Gowda, silver medalist in discus throw.

Industry captains include Infosys CEO and Managing Director S Gopalakrishnan and CII Karnataka chapter chairman Aroon Raman.

Noted activists fighting against AIDS/HIV, Dr Shiva Halli, a professor in University of Manitoba, US, got the award in social services. Prof Halli, hailing from Karnataka, was instrumental in bringing Bill and Melinda Gates foundation to Bijapur and clinch Rs 300 crore fund to fight AIDS in the district.

Noted wildlife expert Ullas Karanth, active in Project Tiger for nearly two decades and leading Kannada daily Chief Reporter P Thyagaraj are the other notable recipients of the Rajyotsava Award this year.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs one lakh, a 20 gram gold medal and a citation.

Following is the list of Rajyotsava Award Winners: Environment and Wildlife: Ullas Karanth and Prof B M Kumaraswamy. Agriculture: Aiyappa Masagi, Hanumanthappa Siddappa Karagi and C R Soragavi. Sports: A Ashwini, Ashwini Ponnappa, Vikas Gowda, K R Shankar Iyer, Shivananda Hombal, Kallappa Ramappa Picheli, H R Gopalakrishna, B Shantaram Shetty, Pramila Aiyappa and Gopal Kharvi.

Literature: Dr K V Narayana, DR O L Nagabhushana Swamy, B R Lakshmanrao, Dr Latha Rajashekar, Dr Siddalinga Pattanshetty, Dr Nilagiri Talvar, Dr Veena Shanteshwar, Dr Durga Das, Dr D A Shankar and Srinivas Vaidya.

Light Music: B R Chaya, Lahari Velu, Chandrika Gururaj, Shantappa Mallappa Hadapad and Manjula Gururaj.

Journalism: Hunasavadi Rajan, Mahendra Mishra, Gangadhar Modaliyar, Thimmappa Bhat, P Thyagaraj, V Samiulla, Nahida Ataullah, S Rajendran, Somashekara Kavachur, Hameed Palya, Aruna, Manoj Patil, A Suryaprakash, R T Majjagi and Nina Gopal.
