Bengaluru, Apr 24: The transport department had previously extended the deadline for the implementation of High Security Number Plates (HSRP) in November and February of last year. However, the deadline was not met for various reasons. Consequently, the department has now ordered strict enforcement of HSRP before May 31.

In August of last year, the Transport Department issued a notification making it mandatory for all vehicles registered in the state before April 1, 2019, to be fitted with HSRP. According to transport officials, approximately two crore vehicles in the state require high security number plates.

Despite two deadline extensions, only 34 lakh HSRPs have been registered in the state. Additional commissioner of transport (enforcement) C Mallikarjuna stated that approximately 18 lac registrations have occurred since February, and more vehicles are yet to opt for HSRP.

Mallikarjuna explained, "We will wait until May 31 to enforce HSRP. It is expected that around 75 lac vehicles will register for HSRP by then. Subsequently, we will appeal to the government not to extend the deadline further and to impose penalties."

"A fine of Rs 500 will be imposed initially, and Rs 1,000 thereafter if vehicle owners fail to comply until HSRP implementation. We will await the finalization of the model code of conduct and seek the government's opinion. If HSRP implementation remains unsatisfactory, we will urge the government to enforce stricter rules," he added.
