Bhatkal 28 October 2018: (Bhatkallys News Bureau) A public park in Bhatkal named after Sardar Vallabai Patel on Bunder road of Bhatkal is in desperate need of revival as the non-maintenance by the local Municipal body has almost 'killed its vibes' according to local residents.
The park located on a prime location on Bunder road, was once a hub for family outings especially during weekends, but sadly it has lately turned into a hub of anti-social and illegal activities, as many drug peddling activities were busted in the park recently, the used bottles of liquor in the almost all the corners in the park, also have a story to tell in itself.
A local resident passing by says "A few officials gather here on Environment Day and while conducting Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan, and for the rest of the year it remains deserted nobody visits here"
Park comes under the Town Municipal Council, which tried to pump life into the dying park in 2016 and sanctioned funds of about Rs. 2 lakh for its renovation but it did pay off as it failed to 'beautify' the park and get its spark back. The said work was completed in January 2017, at the cost of Rs. 1,99,397.
Another attempt of renovating the park was halted as Sand mining was banned in the district, and unavailability of sand led to abrupt halt of the renovation work.
Speaking to Bhatkallys.com TMC President Sadiq Matta added "We had already started the work of renovating the park and making it a 'Public park' once again. but the ban on sand mining followed by unavailability of sand we had to halt the work, but the good news is as DC Nakul has permitted sand mining last week, we are expected to resume the work in early November, we will take the issue up in this month's general body meeting and funds will be sanctioned after getting tender quotations from our engineer".
"Once the park in renovated we will make sure it is regulated properly and no unethical activities will take place in their" the TMC President further said.
A visit to the dilapidated park, one can see a bunch of local youngsters playing cricket, a few men using their mobile phones, and a couple of women with their children who are disappointed that they can't play on the swings of the park.
While it is disappointing that the such public parks was being misused for activities like drugs peddling, and liquoring but the attitude and efforts of local TMC to revive the park is the positive to take into stride and laud their efforts while hoping that the park get its real recognition of 'public park' soon.
