Plastic carry bags banned in Bhatkal

Bhatkal, 21 July 2016 - Karnataka State government has banned the use of Plastic as per notification which cites: "No shopkeeper, vendor, wholesale dealer, retailer, trader, hawker or salesman shall use plastic carry bags, plastic banners, plastic buntings, flex, plastic flags, plastic plates, plastic cups, plastic spoons, cling films and plastic sheets for spreading on dining table irrespective of thickness including the above items made of thermocol and plastic which use plastic micro beeds."
The notification also bars manufacturers from producing the aforementioned plastic products’ or storing or supplying or transporting the same.
Calling on residents of Bhatkal to comply with the state-wide ban on plastic products, Chidananda S. Vatare, Assistant Commissioner of Bhatkal hosted a meeting to provide further information about the ban.
The AC requested all government officials, traders, NGO's and social organisation to inform resident's in their locality - both Municipality and Panchayat areas of Bhatkal and its surrounding areas.
During the discussion, concerns were raised about the availability of alternate solutions in the absence of plastic products.
Officials and community representatives present at the meeting included C T Naik, Taluka Panchayat office , Ramesh, chief Officer Bhatkal Muncipality , Venktesh Prabhu, President Bhatkal Merchant Associaiton , Rajesh Naik, Mohiddin Altaf Kharoori , Tanzeem General secretary, Enayatullah Shabandri, Verendra Shanbhag, Principal Shri Guru Sudhindera College were present.
