Karnataka: Adventure tourism gets a big push in Uttara Kannada

Uttara Kannada, 4 september 2017: Videos promoting activities such as hang gliding and scuba diving will be released over the next three months to promote the district as a new tourism destination With a new theme ‘One District, Many Adventures’, the adventure sports activities in the naturally-rich district of Uttara Kannada will begin next month. Additional Deputy Commissioner, Uttara Kannada, H Prasanna, said, “With the focus on cleanliness and safety, more activities will be introduced this year. We will also promote the district by releasing promotional videos within the next three months. In addition, through the Dr Ravindranath Tagore Beach Development and Conservation Committee, we hope to complete setting up of a rock garden on six acres of land that will highlight the culture and lifestyle of the people of Uttara Kannada. Among other adventure activities to be included this year is the hang gliding. Hang gliding is popular in Australia, Europe and Canada. Pune-based Celestial Flights LLP has been permitted to introduce hang gliding in the district.” Since the response to the committee has been amazing, each beach in the district will be covered by the committee and it has been decided to rename the committee to Uttara Kannada District Beach Development and Conservation Committee. Every beach is expected to have a life guard watch tower and the Warship Museum will also be upgraded. Uttara Kannada district has a coastline of 140 kilometers from Karwar to Bhatkal and has more than 20 beaches. Among them Teelamati, Majali, Devbhag and Rabindranath Tagore Beach are located in Karwar; Belikeri, Nadibag beach and Honey beach in Ankola; Gokarna, Kudle, Om, Kumta Beach in Kumta; Dhareshwara, Ramanagindi, Pavinakurve, Kasargod, Apsarakonda in Honnavar; and Murudeshwara, Jali, Huilumudi Beach in Bhatkal are the prominent beaches of the district. The district is also known for its magnificent waterfalls. It is famous for Devkara, Golari and Nagaramudi waterfalls in Karwar; Vibhuti falls in Ankola; Apsarakonda water falls in Honnavar; Bennehole, Shivaganga in Sirsi; Unchalli, Jog, and Burude waterfalls in Sirsi; and Magoda, Shirle and Sathodi waterfalls in Yellapur. Prasanna said adventure activities such as scuba diving at Nethrani Island, paramotoring at the Tagore Beach, dolphin rides to spot the Indo-pacific humpback species and trekking will be launched from September.
