Bhatkal's municipal park needs a facelift

BHATKAL - In urbanised towns, where green spaces are virtually non-existent, municipal park serves as valuable lung spaces and a place for relaxation. The  Sardar Vallabhai Patel Garden (park)  on Bunder Road under the Bhatkal Town Municipality badly needs a facelift. Its terrible condition keep people away. Under 13th Finance Commission funding,  a meagre sum of 2 lakhs was  sanctioned  for its development and repairs. Yet the park embracing 40 gunta of land does not seem to be  a place where visitors can go and spend some  time. The two public toilets are in a bad shape while there  are no lights at nights.  Empty plastic bottles, liquor bottles, and garbage have become an eyesore. The presence of liquor bottles suggest that anti-social elements may  have made the park a safe haven for their  unhealthy activities. The municipality has assured that some steps to provide basic facilities will be taken up. Parks are meant to provide an ambient space for jogging, relaxation,  nature tours, family picnics, physical exercise, play stations and are terrific stress-busters. So, there is a need for a massive facelift of the park with good infrastructure and amenities.
